The purpose of these visits is to review your cervical, breast cancer and any other relevant screening according to your age group. A pelvic examination and breast exam is usually performed during your visit.

Pap Test

A Pap test is a test used to check for the presence of any abnormal cells that may be present on your cervix. We are able to prevent the majority of cervical cancer cases by having women screened regularly. The Pap test is currently available to all women in Manitoba free of charge from ages 21 to 69 if you have ever had sexual contact. A Pap test is done every 3 years in average risk women, sooner if you have an abnormal result that requires follow-up.

*Trans, non-binary and all gender-diverse persons with a cervix should also have a Pap test

Any female who has engaged in sexual intercourse, which is defined as any form of vaginal intercourse, vaginal/oral or vaginal/digital outercourse would be eligible for a Pap test. This test is encouraged for every woman irrespective of whom they have intercourse with.

Breast Cancer Screening

Breast cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed breast cancer in women. One in 9 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, therefore the importance of early detection is key in order to detect breast cancer early and increase one’s chances for sure. Screening is offered starting at age 50 to 74. You may be eligible for earlier screening if risk factors such as a family history warrant so.

A mammogram continues to be the single best tool for women to detect breast cancer early. It is an X-ray of your breast tissue that helps to detect breast cancer early.

*Trans, non-binary and all gender-diverse persons should also undergo mammograms.
